The Sacral Chakra (or Svadhisthana Chakra) is the second chakra of the body's seven major chakras and is located just below the navel. The Sacral Chakra is associated with the element of water, fluidity, adaptability, and emotional flow and is linked to the colour orange. It happens to be one of my favourite chakras to work with, balance and clear!

The Sacral Chakra is related to creativity, pleasure, and emotions. When this chakra is balanced and flowing smoothly we feel in touch with our emotions and are able to express them in a healthy way. We also feel connected to our creativity and are able to express ourselves through artistic and other forms of self-expression. When balanced, we feel pleasure and enjoyment in life and are able to experience intimacy and connection with others in a healthy and fulfilling way. This chakra is vital in maintaining healthy relationships and nurturing a sense of self-worth.

Characteristics of the Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra is a BIG one and is associated with so much. It is the centre of inspiration and the source of creative energy and so it is strongly linked to creativity, artistic expression, and passionate pursuits. It governs emotions, feelings, and sensitivity and is responsible for maintaining a healthy emotional balance, fostering self-acceptance, and allowing for the expression of emotions in a healthy way. A balanced Sacral Chakra fosters a sense of joy, enthusiasm, and zest for life. It encourages us to embrace life's experiences with a positive attitude and find joy in simple pleasures.

The Sacral Chakra influences our ability to form and maintain healthy relationships. It is linked to our capacity for empathy, compassion, and understanding of others, as well as our ability to connect with them on an emotional level. This chakra is also connected to our ability to experience intimacy, pleasure, and sensual satisfaction and is closely associated with sexual energy, desires, and reproductive functions.

Linked to personal power, confidence, and self-esteem, a balanced Sacral Chakra enables individuals to assert themselves, make decisions, and express their authentic selves without fear or doubt.

What Happens If the Sacral Chakra Is Blocked?

A blocked Sacral Chakra can hinder the free flow of creative energy, resulting in a lack of inspiration, creative blocks, or feeling disconnected from artistic or imaginative abilities. It can lead to a lack of zest for life, reduced enthusiasm, and a general feeling of apathy making it challenging to find joy and pleasure in activities or to feel motivated and inspired. People may experience difficulties in regulating emotions, leading to emotional ups and downs, mood swings, emotional numbness, heightened sensitivity, or inability to express and process emotions effectively.

An imbalanced Sacral Chakra can affect one's ability to form and maintain healthy, fulfilling relationships leading to difficulties in establishing emotional connections, a fear of intimacy, or challenges in expressing empathy and compassion can arise. As it is closely associated with sexuality and sensuality, when it is blocked it can result in a decreased sexual drive, difficulties in experiencing pleasure or intimacy, or a disconnection from one's own sexuality. Also associated with reproductive organs, imbalances can result in physical issues in the reproductive system, such as menstrual irregularities, fertility problems, or issues related to sexual function.

Lastly, a blocked Sacral Chakra may lead to issues around personal power and control resulting in a lack of confidence, difficulty in asserting oneself, or a tendency to either dominate or be overly submissive in relationships. (YUCK!)

Some Practices to Balance the Sacral Chakra

To help balance and activate the Sacral Chakra, there are a number of activities you can try. By incorporating these, and other practices into your daily routine, you can help activate and balance the Sacral Chakra, leading to greater emotional and creative flow, pleasure, and fulfilment in life.

Engaging in activities that allow you to express yourself creatively, such as painting, writing, or dancing, can help activate the Sacral Chakra and promote emotional and creative flow. Stimulating the senses, such as enjoying a good meal, listening to music, or spending time in nature, can help activate the sacral chakra and promote pleasure and enjoyment in life.

Using essential oils such as rose, jasmine, sandalwood, and ylang-ylang can help to stimulate your sacral chakra. You can either diffuse them or apply them topically. And if you’re a crystal kind of person, crystals and gemstones such as carnelian, tiger's eye, and sunstone are said to stimulate the sacral chakra’s energy. You can carry them in your pocket, place them in your home, or use them during a healing session.

As with other chakras, alternative therapies including Meditation, sound baths and yoga promote chakra healing. If you regularly practice Yoga, some poses can stimulate the sacral chakra, such as pigeon pose, cow face pose, and cobra pose. And of course, one could book a Reiki healing session with me!

Based on all the things associated with the Sacral Chakra the benefits of keeping it balanced are absolutely clear! A balanced Sacral Chakra is essential in promoting emotional wellbeing, creativity and healthy relationships. By creating a healthy and balanced Sacral Chakra, you can experience pleasure, joy, and happiness in all aspects of life!
