More Than Just Pretty Rocks: 7 of My Favourite Crystals

If you’re anything like me, you don’t just collect crystals because they look beautiful on a shelf. You want tools that help you feel a little steadier, clearer, more protected, and more like yourself at the end of a long day.

I used to buy crystals the way exhausted women buy throw pillows: hoping this one might finally fix the vibe. Tiny pockets full of Rose Quartz. Black Tourmaline in every bag. Selenite beside the bed like spiritual security staff. And honestly? It helped.

Not because they erased my problems, but because they reminded me to slow down long enough to actually notice myself again.

So… Do Crystals Actually “Work”?

Personally? I believe crystals carry energy.

Everything in this world carries a frequency, and crystals have been used across cultures for centuries as tools for grounding, protection, intention, healing, and spiritual connection. But I also think their real power comes from relationship and awareness.

A crystal isn’t here to magically erase your problems overnight. It’s a companion. An anchor. A physical reminder to slow down, check in with yourself, and move through the world with more intention.

When I hold Black Tourmaline before walking into an overwhelming environment, it shifts something in me.

When I sleep beside Amethyst, my body softens differently.

When I work with Clear Quartz during Reiki, the energy feels sharper and more focused.

That experience feels very real to me.

Whether you connect with crystals spiritually, energetically, emotionally, or simply because they help you feel more grounded, there’s space for all of it here.

How to Choose a Crystal Without Overthinking It

You do not need to memorize crystal encyclopedias.

Most of the time, the right crystal is simply the one you keep coming back to.

The colour, texture, or feeling may resonate before you even understand why. Start there.

You can also choose based on support:

  • Need grounding? Try Black Tourmaline.

  • Feeling emotionally tender? Rose Quartz.

  • Burnt out and foggy? Clear Quartz or Citrine.

  • Moving through change? Green Aventurine.

The best crystal is the one that helps you reconnect with yourself — not the most expensive one on the shelf.

Think of These Stones as Sacred Little Anchors

They aren’t magic wands that fix everything overnight, but they can be little battery packs for the energies you want to boost. I pretty much collect every variety of crystal I come across but; here are a few of my favourite anchors.

Clear Quartz: The Signal Booster

For Clarity & Amplification

Use this when you’re setting intentions, journaling, or starting something new. Clear Quartz has a way of sharpening your focus and helping your intentions feel a little more intentional.

Amethyst: The Mental Exhale

For Stress Relief & Rest

Keep this beside your bed or hold it during quiet moments. To me, Amethyst feels like closing all the tabs in your brain after an overstimulating day so your nervous system can finally unclench.

Rose Quartz: The Heart Softener

For Self-Compassion & Emotional Healing

Five rough pink rose quartz stones are clustered on a light, smooth surface, creating a soft and serene mood.

This isn’t just a romance crystal. Rose Quartz is for the moments when your inner critic gets a little too loud. Think of it as emotional warmth — the energetic equivalent of wrapping yourself in a weighted blanket.

Black Tourmaline: The Boundary Stone

For Protection & Grounding

Keep this in your pocket during stressful days, crowded spaces, or emotionally heavy conversations. I think of Black Tourmaline as a filter — helping you stay grounded without absorbing every ounce of chaos around you.

Citrine: The Solar Spark

For Confidence & Creative Momentum

Keep Citrine near your workspace or anywhere you create. It carries bright, warm energy that helps you reconnect to confidence, motivation, and that “I’m allowed to take up space” feeling.

Yes, I call that expensive energy.

Selenite: The Energetic Clean Sweep

For Cleansing & Resetting

Selenite is one of my favourite tools after emotionally heavy days. Use it to gently sweep around your body, place it near your bed, or rest your other crystals on it overnight for a little energetic refresh.

Green Aventurine: The Courage Stone

For Growth & New Beginnings

Green gemstones, various sizes, on a white surface. The largest stone has visible veins; others are smooth and rounded. Calm, natural vibe.

If you’re stepping into a new chapter, healing journey, or life transition, carry this one with you. Green Aventurine has such a grounding, heart-centered energy for moving forward without needing to have everything perfectly figured out first.

How to Use Them (Without It Being a Full-Time Job)

You don’t need complicated rituals or a perfectly curated altar. You just need little energetic touchpoints woven into your actual life.

The Desk Setup

Put some Citrine and Clear Quartz next to your computer to boost your focus, spark creativity, and keep your mind clear. Citrine, often called the "merchant's stone," is great for attracting success and prosperity. It connects with the solar plexus chakra, giving you a boost in personal power and confidence. Plus, it helps keep your mindset positive, encourages enthusiasm and determination, and gets rid of negative vibes for a more productive environment.

Clear Quartz is awesome for ramping up energy, sharpening your focus, and keeping your thoughts clear. It’s a strong energy conductor, which is super helpful for concentrating and thinking clearly, especially when you're tackling complex projects or brainstorming. When you pair Citrine and Clear Quartz, they work together to boost productivity and inspire innovation and clarity in your workspace.

The Commute Shield

Carry Black Tourmaline in your bag, pocket, or car to shield yourself from energy-draining environments. This crystal absorbs negative vibes and protects against electromagnetic fields, creating a personal shield that helps manage stress and negativity in crowded places.

Besides protection, Black Tourmaline improves focus and concentration, making it ideal for work or study. It helps you stay grounded and attentive in busy or stressful settings.

The Reiki Pairing

If you're one of my clients, you know I love using crystals in all my sessions. Feel free to bring your favorite crystal to your next Reiki session. I like to include them so you can take some of that grounding, restorative energy home with you afterward.

A Gentle Note on Cleansing Your Crystals

You do not need a full moon ceremony, twelve herbs, and a handwritten permission slip from the universe. A simple intention works beautifully.

Smoke cleanse them.

Place them on Selenite.

Leave them under moonlight.

Or honestly? Just hold them for a second and reconnect with why you picked them up in the first place.

Intent matters more than perfection.

A Loving Reality Check

As much as I adore crystals, I also think it’s important to say this clearly; you cannot crystal your way out of complete burnout.

There’s a difference between support and repair.

Crystals can support your energy.

Rest can support your energy.

Tea, journaling, baths, walks in the woods — all supportive.

These tools are supportive. Beautiful. Meaningful. Helpful.

But sometimes your nervous system is carrying years of survival mode, emotional overload, grief, people-pleasing, or chronic stress. That’s deeper than a quick energetic tune-up.

That’s when healing work becomes less about “fixing” yourself and more about finally giving your body permission to soften. That’s where Reiki can become something more than just a comforting ritual. It creates space for your system to slow down, release what it’s been gripping onto, and finally exhale a little.

Sometimes healing looks less like becoming someone new and more like returning to yourself underneath all the noise.
